Do I need Credit Counseling?

Credit counselling can be an excellent way for some people to solve their debt problems. However it is important to keep in mind that it is not appropriate for everybody. It is intended for people in a specific financial position. Therefore before you enter credit counselling it is important to make sure that it is the right choice for you. There are serious consequences to credit counselling so you don't want to rush into it.

Credit counselling is a process for getting out of debt in which you will work with a counsellor to come up with a repayment plan to get yourself out of debt. The two of you will sit down and work out a budget that you can manage and figure out how much you can afford to pay each month. Your credit counsellor will then negotiate with your creditors on your behalf in order to reduce the amount that you owe to a level that you can pay within your budget. The decision to enter credit counselling is a big one and should not be entered into lightly.

The signs that you may want to consider credit counselling are that you are unable to make your monthly payments on your debts. As long as you are able to make your payments there is no reason to enter credit counselling. However if you can't make the minimum payments on your credit cards you should definitely consider it. The same is true if you are regularly late at making your payments or if you are receiving calls from collections agents. Basically if you are unable to pay your bills and all of your other attempts to solve the problem have failed.

In some cases your debt problem may be so serious that you may have to take more drastic measures to deal with it. It is estimated that less than half of the people who enter credit counselling will actually succeed and get their debts paid off. Most of those who fail are people who never should have been in credit counselling in the first place. The best idea is to find out from your credit counsellor how long it is going to take to get your debts paid off. The rule of thumb is that it should take two to four years. A plan that takes longer than this is unlikely to be successful. If it is going to take longer than four years to pay off your debts you are in too deep for credit counselling and you need to look into bankruptcy.

It is important to keep in mind that Credit counseling is only for people who have serious debt problems. A lot of people look at as an easy way to get out of debt. The truth is that credit counselling will destroy your credit rating, it is almost as bad as a bankruptcy so it is not the sort of thing that you should consider unless you are in real financial difficulties.
